Code of Conduct
The full Rainbow DJ Lab code of conduct for kids and grown-ups, which every family agrees to at registration.
Purpose
Everyone in the Lab follows the same simple rules, kids and grown-ups alike. Agreeing to this code is a required part of registration. Please read it together with your child.
Agree online: part of full registration, which opens only after every launch-checklist item is complete. Until then the online form is an interest list that doesn't ask for this. Printable version (for full registration after launch): code-of-conduct.pdf
These are policies Ras Tafari Inc. commits to. Formal board adoption is a launch requirement.
Part 1: The DJ Code (for kids)
Hey DJ! Here's how we roll in the Lab.
Respect the crew
- Be kind to everyone at your station. No put-downs, no teasing, no hitting, no pushing.
- Take turns. Jobs switch every 3 minutes 45 seconds: DJ, Co-pilot, Hype and Logger. Every job matters.
- Hype means cheering for people, never laughing at them.
Respect the gear
- Gentle hands on the controller and laptop. They're for everybody.
- No food or drinks at the decks. Water bottles stay at the water spot.
- If something breaks or looks wrong, tell a grown-up. You won't be in trouble for telling.
Protect your ears
- Keep the headphone volume where it's set.
- Earplugs are free. Ask any time.
- Stay out of the zone right in front of the big speakers.
Clean music only
- We play radio edits only. If you hear a bad word, tell a grown-up so we can fix the crate.
"Data!" is how we learn
- When a mix crashes, that's not a fail. It's Data! Name one reason and try again.
- No laughing at anyone's mistake. Everybody crashes, even pros.
Spotlight is your choice
- You never have to play in Spotlight. If you sign up, the crew listens and cheers.
Stay safe
- Stay with your group. Ask before you go anywhere.
- Go to the bathroom with a buddy. A grown-up will walk you there and wait outside.
- Never leave with anyone unless the grown-ups at the sign-out table say it's okay.
- If anyone (a kid or a grown-up) makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, tell a Lab grown-up or your family. You will not get in trouble for telling.
If things get rough
- A grown-up gives you a reminder.
- Then a redirect: a different job or spot.
- Then a cool-down in a calm spot where a grown-up can see you.
- Then we call your grown-up at home.
- If it keeps happening, you might take a break from the Lab for a while, with a plan to come back.
Nobody will ever hit you, shame you, or keep you from water, food or the bathroom.
I promise to follow the DJ Code. Child's first name: __
Part 2: Guardian Code
As a parent, guardian or authorized pickup adult, I agree to:
Arrival and pickup
- Sign my child in at every class and arrive about 10 minutes early.
- Pick up on time, and bring photo ID. I understand my child will be released only to an adult on the authorized-pickup list.
- Make any changes to the pickup list in writing before the class where they apply.
- Understand that a child aged 8–11 will not be released to walk home alone without my written permission in advance.
Health and safety
- Keep my child home when they're sick (fever of 100.4°F or higher, vomiting or diarrhea) and follow the return rules.
- Keep my child's medical, allergy and contact information up to date, and provide medication only in its original pharmacy container with a signed authorization.
- Answer or return calls from the Lab during class time when possible.
Respect
- Treat children, families, staff, volunteers and park staff with respect. I won't yell at, threaten, or physically discipline any child at a Lab activity, including my own.
- I won't correct or discipline other people's children. I'll bring concerns to Lab staff.
- Respect privacy. I'll keep my private family link within my household and tell the Lab if it gets shared so a coach can re-issue it, and I'll photograph only my own child.
A safe, substance-free space
- Never bring or use alcohol, tobacco, vaping products or cannabis at any Lab activity, and never arrive impaired. I understand staff will not release a child to an adult who appears impaired and will call another authorized adult instead, or 911 if the child is in danger.
- Never bring weapons to any Lab activity.
Supporting the two-adult rule
- Understand that Lab adults are never alone with a child out of sight, never drive children in personal vehicles, and don't arrange private contact with children outside the program. If I see any of these things, I'll report them to Stephen Henry.
- Understand that every Lab adult is a mandated reporter and must report suspected abuse or neglect directly to the DCFS Hotline (1-800-25-ABUSE) or 911, without anyone's permission.
Working it out
- Bring concerns to Stephen Henry (872-255-9333, stephen@selassiefest.com) first, calmly. I understand the program's fair process for any pause in participation.
I understand that serious or repeated violations of this code by an adult may lead to that adult being asked not to attend Lab activities, or to a pause in my child's participation, following the fair process.
I agree to the Guardian Code and have reviewed the DJ Code with my child. Guardian name: __ Date: __
Who sees it
Your agreement (a checkbox and date) is stored privately for coaches and Stephen Henry only.
How long it's kept
It's kept with the registration record for 3 years, then deleted (policy commitment).
