Your first day

What happens on your first day at the Rainbow DJ Lab, step by step.

Before you come

  • Your grown-up signs you in. You don't come in alone.
  • Eat something and bring a water bottle.
  • If you feel sick or have a fever, stay home and rest. You can come next time.

When you get there

Your grown-up signs you in with a coach. Then you get your Passport. It's a card where you collect stamps for new skills.

What happens in class

A class is 90 minutes. That's an hour and a half. Here's the plan:

Part What you do
Drop In Music is playing. Find the beat! Clap on 1, stomp on 4.
Mission Card Find out today's mission. Guess what will happen.
Watch Me Think A coach shows you how a DJ thinks.
Deck Time 1 Your team takes turns on the controller.
Move Break Get up and dance!
Deck Time 2 Try again. You pick Mild, Medium or Spicy.
Wordplay Lab Silly word games with song names.
Spotlight Kids who want to play for 60 seconds on the big speaker. You only play if you raise your hand.
Check Out Rate yourself. Collect your stamps.

Your team and your jobs

You're on a team of 4 kids. Your team shares one controller. Every few minutes, you switch jobs:

  • DJ: Hands on the decks. You try the mission.
  • Co-pilot: Headphones on. Count the beat out loud. Ask the DJ, "Did it work?"
  • Hype: You are the crowd! Practice saying one line on the beat.
  • Logger: Write down what happened in the Mix Log.

Everybody gets a turn at every job.

At the end

You give yourself a traffic light:

  • Green: I got it!
  • Yellow: Getting there.
  • Red: Not yet.

Red is OK! It just tells you what to practice. Then you finish this sentence: "Next time I'll…"

There are no grades and no tests.

Going home

You only leave with a grown-up on your family's pickup list. A coach checks their ID. You don't walk home alone unless your grown-up said yes in writing first.

Feeling nervous?

That's normal! Lots of kids feel that way on day one. Tell a coach. They'll help you.
