Mission 4: Mix on the One
What your child learns in Mission 4 of Rainbow DJ Lab, timing the second song to start at exactly the right moment.
Mission 4 · Orange · Mix on the One
Mission: "My second song starts at the right moment."
By Mission 4, your child knows the controller, has built a clean crate (Mission 2), and can count beats, bars and phrases (Mission 3). Now they put it together: wait for beat 1 of a new phrase, then bring the next song in.
The Lab is proposed and not running yet. Children work through the Missions at their own pace.
What came before
| Mission | Title | What they learned |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Meet the Machine | Play two songs and fade between them |
| 2 | Build Your Crate | Build a crate of clean radio edits, read BPM on screen, find a song in under 20 seconds |
| 3 | Beats, Bars and Phrases | 4 beats make a bar, 8 bars make a phrase. Read the waveform: intro, verse, hook, drop, outro. |
What your child does in this Mission
- Watch Me Think: the coach starts song B on beat 1 of a new phrase, does a quick cut with the crossfader, then a drop swap. Listen for: "Not yet… not yet… new phrase, beat 1, go."
- Deck Time 2 levels:
- Mild: start song B on beat 1.
- Medium: cut with the crossfader on a phrase change.
- Spicy: do a drop swap, cutting from one drop straight into another.
- Move Break: a count-the-phrase walk. Kids change direction every 8 bars.
- Wordplay Lab: Answer Songs. Kids pick a song whose title answers the last one, so the crowd hears a conversation.
Passport skills in this Mission
- Count phrases out loud
- Start song B on the one
- Cut on a phrase change
By the end of this Mission, your child has had the chance to earn 12 stamps (3 per Mission). Six stamps complete a color badge, so this is when many kids earn their orange badge, after red in Mission 2.
What a 9-year-old might feel
- More confident. The routine is familiar now: same blocks, same station jobs.
- Impatient. Waiting for the phrase change is hard. "Not yet… not yet…" is the whole lesson.
- Proud of a level jump. Some kids try Medium or Spicy for the first time around now. Some stay at Mild, and that's fine. Kids choose, and they can switch any time.
What to ask at dinner
This Mission's home question: "Which two songs did you make talk to each other?"
Also try: - "Count a phrase for me. Where's the one?" - "Did you guess the Mission difficulty right?" - "What was the best pun in the room today?"
Good time to check in
