Independence
What "independence" means at Rainbow DJ Lab, the decisions children make for themselves, and the things they are never left to do alone.
What we mean by independence
At the Lab, independence means children learn to make their own decisions at the decks and to judge their own progress honestly. It does not mean children are left unsupervised. A child can be in charge of the music and still be surrounded by screened adults.
What your child decides
At the decks
- Which song comes next. Kids build their own crate of clean songs and choose what to play.
- When to bring the next song in. By Mission 4 they're waiting for beat 1 of a new phrase and making the call themselves.
- How to fix a mistake. When a mix crashes, the station shouts "Data!" and the DJ names one reason, then decides what to try next.
- What goes in their set. In Mission 13 each child fills in their own Set Map (Opener, Build, Theme Clash, Peak, Exit) and writes their own Plan B.
About their challenge
- Their level. In Deck Time 2, each child picks Mild, Medium or Spicy, and can switch any time without asking.
- Their prediction. At the start of each class, kids guess whether the Mission will be easy, medium or hard for them, and say why.
About their own progress
- Their self-rating. At Check Out, kids tap a traffic light: I got it / Getting there / Not yet.
- Their next step. Each child writes a "Next time I'll…" line.
- Whether to perform. Spotlight is volunteers only. Coaches never call on a child who didn't sign up.
In their group
- Taking a job seriously. Every child rotates through DJ, Co-pilot, Hype and Logger. The Co-pilot asks the DJ "Did it work?" Kids learn to coach each other.
How adults support it
- The coach thinks out loud in "Watch Me Think," so kids hear how an experienced DJ makes decisions before they make their own.
- Coaches ask before they touch a child's controls.
- Coaches compare each child's self-rating with what they saw. If the two differ, they talk about it. That conversation is part of the lesson.
What children are never left to do alone
These are policies Ras Tafari Inc. commits to. Formal board adoption is a launch requirement.
- Never alone with one adult out of sight. At least two screened adults are with children at all times. Any one-on-one moment must be observable and interruptible.
- Never leave on their own. Children are signed in by a parent or guardian and released only to an adult on the authorized-pickup list, after a photo ID check. Children aged 8–11 never walk home alone unless a parent or guardian gives written permission in advance.
- Never go to the restroom alone. Children go in pairs, and an adult waits at the restroom entrance. Little DJs go with their own grown-up.
- Never handle their own medication unsupervised. Medication is stored locked, except rescue medicine, which stays within reach of the trained adult. See Medication storage.
- Never face bad weather alone. Staff decide when to move indoors. In lightning, the group stays inside until 30 minutes after the last thunder.
- Never in the water. Children do not swim during the program.
- Never handle a conflict alone. Staff step in. See Peer harm protocol.
- Never set their own volume past the cap. Headphone volume is capped on every laptop.
