Safety at Rainbow DJ Lab
The safety promises Rainbow DJ Lab makes to every family, at a glance, with links to every safety policy.
Where things stand
Rainbow DJ Lab is proposed. The Chicago Park District has not approved or permitted it, no class dates are set, and no staff are hired.
Every policy in this section is a commitment that takes effect before the first class. These policies were adopted by the Ras Tafari Inc. board on October 17, 2026. No class runs until every item on the launch checklist is checked.
Our safety promises at a glance
| Promise | What it means for your child |
|---|---|
| Two adults, always | At least two screened adults are with the children at all times. No adult is ever alone with a child out of sight. |
| Observable and interruptible | Any one-on-one moment (for example, a mentor reviewing a recording) happens where another person can see it and walk up to it. This standard is modeled on the U.S. Center for SafeSport's Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies. |
| Ratio 1 to 6 | No more than 6 children per screened adult: 12 children need 2 adults. Little DJs (ages 5–7) also have their own grown-up in the room. |
| Every adult cleared first | A Chicago Park District background check, run by the Park District under its rules, plus references and youth-protection training, all done before a person's first class. CPD's process covers every adult on site, including sound and stage crew. |
| Sound crew stay with the sound | Q-Ality Sound provides sound, stage and lighting only. Its staff never supervise children, have no unsupervised contact with them, get no family data and take no photos or recordings. |
| Every adult is a mandated reporter | Everyone completes Illinois DCFS mandated reporter training before working with children, and reports concerns directly. |
| First aid in every class | At least one adult per class holds current pediatric first aid/CPR/AED certification (American Red Cross or American Heart Association). |
| Signed in, signed out | A parent or guardian signs each child in. Children leave only with an adult on your authorized-pickup list, after a photo ID check, and every release is recorded. |
| No walking home alone (ages 8–11) | Unless you give written permission in advance. |
| No private messages with children | Adults never message a child privately. Messages go to parents, or to a group with a parent copied. |
| Substance-free | No alcohol, tobacco, vaping or cannabis at any Lab activity, for anyone. |
| You hear from us the same day | If anything happens, we call you the same day and send a written report within 24 hours. |

What you can always do
- Ask any question about safety at any time. Call or email Stephen Henry: 872-255-9333, stephen@selassiefest.com.
- Ask for confirmation that each adult working with your child cleared the Park District's background check, and the dates they completed Lab training (not the records themselves). See Staff screening.
- Take a concern about any adult straight to the Chicago Park District at the Rainbow Beach Park office, (312) 745-1479.
- Call 911 or the DCFS Hotline yourself. You never need our permission.
