Rainbow DJ Lab › Safety › Substance-Free Policy

Substance-Free Policy

No alcohol, tobacco, vaping or cannabis at any Rainbow DJ Lab activity, for adults or children, and what happens if the rule is broken.

Status

This policy was adopted by the Ras Tafari Inc. board on October 17, 2026. It takes effect before the first class.

The rule

No alcohol, tobacco, vaping or cannabis at any Lab activity, for adults or children. That includes:

  • classes, indoors and outdoors;
  • the Rainbow Showcase and any family event run by the Lab;
  • setup and teardown while children are present or arriving.

Cannabis is legal for adults in Illinois. It is still not allowed at the Lab, in any form, including edibles.

What it covers

Who Not allowed Also not allowed
Lab adults (staff, volunteers, guest DJs, officers) Using, carrying openly, or offering alcohol, tobacco, vapes or cannabis at a Lab activity Arriving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or any drug, or smelling strongly of it
Children Using or bringing any of these Sharing prescription or over-the-counter medicine (see Medication storage)
Parents and visitors Using any of these at a Lab activity Arriving to pick up a child while impaired (see Impaired adult protocol)

Also covered:

  • Music: clean lyrics only (radio edits, checked when crates are built). No songs glorifying drug use in a way a coach would not play for a 9-year-old.
  • Clothing and gear: Lab adults do not wear or display alcohol, tobacco, vape or cannabis branding at Lab activities.
  • Adult prescription medicine: an adult who takes prescription medicine keeps it out of children's reach. An adult whose medicine makes them unsafe to supervise does not work that day.

What happens if the rule is broken

A Lab adult

  1. The other adult takes over supervision at once. If the class would drop below two screened adults, class ends early and parents are called to pick up.
  2. The adult leaves the activity. If they appear impaired, they do not drive; we help arrange another way home.
  3. The Lab lead is told the same day; parents of the class are told the same day.
  4. Using or being under the influence at a Lab activity is a zero-tolerance item: permanent removal. See Enforcement.

A child

  1. The child is kept safe and in view of an adult. Any substance is taken away and secured.
  2. If the child seems unwell or may have swallowed something: 911 for an emergency, or the Illinois Poison Center, 1-800-222-1222.
  3. The parent is called at once.
  4. Next steps follow the Discipline ladder; safety violations go straight to a parent call. We focus on the child's safety and getting support, not on punishment.

A parent or visitor

  1. A coach calmly asks them to stop or to step away from the activity.
  2. If they are picking up a child and appear impaired, the Impaired adult protocol applies.

What you'll be told

  • A phone call the same day if a substance incident involved your child or happened in your child's class.
  • A written report within 24 hours. See Incident reporting.
