Photos and Recordings

How Rainbow DJ Lab handles listen-back audio recordings, media consent and photos of children.

The short version

  • The class app holds no photos and no video.
  • Listen-back recordings are heard by your child and their mentor, kept only until the session review, then deleted unless your family asks for a copy.
  • Photos or video for any outside use need your separate, opt-in media consent.
  • We never put a child's name with an image.

Status: The Lab is proposed and not running yet. These policies were adopted by the Ras Tafari Inc. board on October 17, 2026.

In the class app

The app at /dj-lab/live/ has no way to take, upload or store photos, video or audio. Kids appear on the in-room station board by first name and last initial only, and a family's private link shows only their own child. See data privacy.

Listen-back recordings

On listen-back Missions (6, 10 and 13), each kid records 2 minutes of their own mix and reviews it with a mentor. Hearing yourself back is one of the best ways DJs improve.

Question Answer
What's recorded? The music your child mixes. It's an audio mix recording, not video
Who hears it? Your child and their mentor during the review, in view of other adults like every one-on-one moment in the Lab. You can hear it too
Where is it kept? On Lab equipment for the session only. It's not uploaded to the class app or its database
How long is it kept? Only until the session review, then deleted
Can we get a copy? Yes. Ask before or at the session, and we'll give a copy to you, the parent or guardian, then delete ours
Is it ever shared or posted? No. Not without your separate media consent
Can my child skip it? Yes. Recording is never required, the same as Spotlight

The registration form asks separately whether you consent to photos or video of your child. The answer is no unless you say yes.

If you say yes:

  • Images may be used to share the Lab's work, for example on Ras Tafari Inc.'s website or in reports to the park and partners.
  • We never put a child's name, or any other identifying detail, with an image.
  • You can withdraw media consent at any time. We'll stop using images of your child going forward and remove them from anything we control. (Something already printed can't be recalled.)

If you say no:

  • We won't take or use photos or video of your child.
  • If your child is in a group shot by accident, we'll crop them out or not use the image.

Children with and without media consent take part in exactly the same way.

Other families and visitors

  • Please don't photograph or record other people's children at any Lab activity, including from the family area.
  • At the Rainbow Showcase, families may photograph their own child. Please don't post images of other children without their family's permission.
  • Staff and volunteers never use personal phones to photograph children.

Concerns

If you see an image of your child used in a way you didn't agree to, contact Stephen Henry (872-255-9333, stephen@selassiefest.com) and we'll take it down. Safeguarding concerns about images go through report a concern.
