Transportation to performances

Families bring their children to and from every Lab event. The Lab never transports children in personal vehicles.

The rule

  • Families transport. A parent, guardian or adult you choose brings your child to each performance and takes them home.
  • The Lab never transports children in personal vehicles. No Lab adult, volunteer or officer will drive your child anywhere, even for a short trip, even in an emergency that isn't life-threatening, and even if you ask. In a medical emergency, we call 911.
  • No informal rides. Lab adults won't offer, arrange or accept a ride with a child, including on public transit or by rideshare.

This is a policy Ras Tafari Inc. commits to. Formal board adoption is a launch requirement.

Why we are stricter than the national standard

The U.S. Center for SafeSport's Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP) recognize that rides to and from activities can put children "in vulnerable positions where they are susceptible to abuse." MAAPP allows an adult to drive a minor one-on-one only with advance written parent consent, or when another adult or at least two other minors aged 8 or older are in the car.

We go further. The Lab doesn't drive children at all, so the question never comes up.

Getting there

  • We share the event location, check-in time and performer-area entrance once they are confirmed. None are set yet. Public stage events, including Rainbow Wednesdays, are proposed.
  • Please arrive at the time given for check-in. Your child is in the Lab's care only after a parent or guardian signs them in at the performer area.

Going home

  • Children are released only to adults on the authorized-pickup list, after a photo ID check. Every release is logged.
  • Children aged 8–11 are never released to walk home alone unless a parent or guardian gives written permission in advance.
  • If the adult picking up appears impaired, we don't release the child. Staff call another authorized adult. If the child is in danger, staff call 911 and make a DCFS hotline report as required.
  • To add someone to your pickup list, contact Stephen Henry before the event.

Carpools between families

Families may choose to carpool with one another. That is a private arrangement between families. It isn't organized, supervised or vetted by the Lab. The Lab's care starts at sign-in and ends at sign-out.
