How It's Played

A wonderful indoor creative toy. Children cut a small circular "peep hole" into one short end of a cardboard shoebox and a large square window in the lid, covered with translucent colored cellophane. Inside the box, they arrange miniature landscapes made of twigs, paper cut-out characters, and colorful foil. Looking through the peep hole reveals a brightly illuminated, theatrical 3D scene.

Cultural Roots

A popular domestic craft that allowed children to become visual storytellers, creating their own self-contained diorama theaters to illustrate school lessons or bedtime stories.
