How It's Played

A simple rhythmic noise-maker. Children take two halves of a clean, dried, hard coconut shell and drill a small hole through the center of each. A piece of twine is threaded through to create handles. By clapping the two hard shells together or striking them against the ground in sequence, children create a loud, distinct horse-hoof sound to accompany street songs.

Cultural Roots

A clear example of using agricultural byproduct for immediate rhythmic expression, heavily utilized in rural storytelling gatherings and impromptu schoolyard bands.
