How It's Played

A classic kinetic toy made from household sewing supplies. A long piece of heavy thread or twine is passed through two opposite holes of a large coat button, and the ends are tied to form a loop. The child holds the ends of the loop, twists the string tight by swinging the button in circles, and then alternately pulls and relaxes their hands to make the button spin at high speeds, creating a humming sound.

Cultural Roots

Found historically across various global folk cultures, this toy was a favorite in Jamaican households due to the easy availability of spare buttons from domestic sewing and mending.
