How It's Played

A simple aerodynamic toy that produces a loud, ominous, roaring sound. A flat, notched piece of wood or bamboo is tied tightly to the end of a long string. The child holds the string and whips it through the air in a large circle overhead. The air resistance causes the wood to spin rapidly, creating a deep vibrato hum.

Cultural Roots

An ancient instrument found across various global indigenous cultures, used in Jamaica as a playful tool to mimic the sound of heavy wind or approaching storms.
