Proposed Programming

Bringing the Community Back to the Beach

A menu of proposed programs — not a confirmed calendar — built around one goal: consistent activities that honor Bongo Beach's history, engage every generation, and give people a reason to come back regularly.

These are proposals, gathered from community input — not yet a confirmed schedule. Following the advice we've already gotten: rather than launch everything at once, we're starting with a few programs, building a regular rhythm, and growing toward one major annual signature event. See our full strategic plan, and share your own ideas at the bottom of this page.

Proposed Programs

Eighteen ideas currently on the table, organized by the pillar each one serves most.

Culture

Bongo Sundays

Monthly community drum circles featuring African, Caribbean, Latin, Chicago, and other musical influences.

The Bongo Beach Drum Call

A signature gathering that starts with one drummer, then others answering the rhythm until the full community circle comes together.

Bongo After Dark

Evening programming: House music, jazz, reggae, spoken word, acoustic performances, and illuminated art.

Beach House Sessions

Smaller cultural performances, storytelling, poetry, comedy, workshops, and community conversations at the historic pavilion.

Chicago House on the Beach

Programming honoring Chicago's House music legacy — DJs, dancing, history, and community participation.

Artists on the Lake

Live painting and art-making along the lakefront, with opportunities for artists to exhibit and sell their work.

Community

South Side Beach Market

Opportunities for local vendors, artists, food entrepreneurs, designers, and natural-product businesses.

Bongo Beach Family Day

Games, double-dutch, sandcastle contests, kite flying, children's drumming, chess, and more.

Senior Beach Social

Daytime activities for our elders — music, cards, chess, line dancing, gentle exercise, and space to share memories of the community.

Movies by the Water

Community movie nights featuring family films, Chicago classics, and culturally significant films or documentaries.

Bongo Beach Games

Volleyball, dominoes, spades, chess, relay races, tug-of-war, and friendly community competitions.

Bongo Beach Wellness Day

Health screenings, fitness activities, wellness information, healthy food demos, and community health resources.

Lakefront

Sunrise at Bongo Beach

Morning yoga, stretching, meditation, walking groups, tai chi, and other wellness activities looking out over the water.

Fishing & Nature Club

Fishing, bird watching, lake ecology, nature walks, and environmental education.

Bongo Beach Cleanup Crew

Community cleanup days incorporating music, youth service opportunities, and local business participation.

Legacy

Bongo Beach History Project

Collecting photographs, stories, flyers, and oral histories from longtime community members. See our Gallery & Archive.

Young Creators Beach Lab

Youth programming in photography, filmmaking, podcasting, DJing, art, and music production.

Lakefront Entrepreneurship Program

Helping residents and small businesses learn about vending, entrepreneurship, and opportunities tied to community programming.

The Long-Term Vision

A Full Day, A Full Week at Bongo Beach

This is the stretch vision for what Bongo Beach could become at full scale — a predictable daily rhythm, with each day of the week carrying its own identity. None of this is scheduled yet; it's the horizon our phased plan is working toward.

Food vendors, marketplace, cultural demos, sports tournaments, business expo, live DJs.

5–8 PM

8–10 PM

Seven Days, Seven Identities

Monday

Wednesday

Diaspora Wednesday

A different diaspora community spotlighted weekly — Ethiopia, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ghana, Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Kenya, Belize.

Thursday

Creative Chicago Thursday

Arts, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Black-owned business marketplace, fashion, poetry, fusion jazz.

Friday

Friday Lime

A relaxed Caribbean-style social gathering for the after-work crowd. Music moves from Lovers Rock through Reggae, Dancehall, and Soca as the evening goes on.

Saturday

Chicago House Saturdays

Celebrating Chicago as the birthplace of House music — DJ showcases, dance battles, vinyl collectors, community cookouts.

Sunday

Chicago Sunday

Gospel brunch, family reunions, community choirs, classic car displays, line dancing — closing with a "Sunset on the Lake" concert honoring Chicago's musical legacy.

"This schedule creates a predictable daily rhythm while giving each day a distinct cultural identity. Friday Lime, Chicago House Saturdays, and Chicago Sundays could become signature attractions that draw visitors from across the globe."
