Manatee Records is a US‑based independent label founded in 1992 by Calvin 'Doc' Flowers, a Belizean‑born music enthusiast and medical doctor. With offices in Chicago and Jamaica, the label has spent over three decades celebrating reggae, dancehall, and Afrobeat music while supporting Afro‑Caribbean and African artists.
Flowers has been deeply involved in Chicago's music community, advocating against gun violence and encouraging artists in both reggae and hip‑hop to reach for the stars. His catalogue includes over 400 reggae titles, and he has recorded and marketed many of Jamaica's top-selling reggae artists.
"He Gave Praise" — A Roots Reggae Renaissance
— Calvin 'Doc' Flowers, President/CEO
In 2021, Manatee Records released "Satta Massagana Rebirth", a powerful reimagining of the iconic Satta Massagana riddim — originally recorded in 1969 at Studio One by The Abyssinians. The project brings together 19 artists from Jamaica, Belize, Trinidad, Argentina, the USA, France, and Mexico, delivering 18 tracks of deep roots energy.
The album features nineties reggae star Don Yute, veteran singer Winston McAnuff, rising star Teeardropz, Ras Ash 1st, Ishmel McAnuff, Fidel Nadal, Jah Defender, and many more. The riddim keeps the meditative, chant‑driven pulse of the original while pushing into a contemporary sound‑system frame.
