Welder Trainee
Build a career in the trade from the ground up. Train under experienced welders, learn shop safety and core weld processes, and work toward AWS certification — no prior welding experience needed.
The Role
An entry-level position for someone with little or no professional welding experience who wants to build a career in the trade. You'll work under direct supervision of experienced welders, learning shop safety, material handling, and basic weld processes, with a defined path toward independent welding and AWS certification. This position is designed to train from the ground up — no prior welding certification is required.
Core Responsibilities
- Learn and follow all shop safety procedures (PPE, ventilation, fire watch, equipment lockout)
- Assist journeyman/lead welders with fit-up, clamping, and material positioning
- Perform grinding, cleaning, and surface prep on parts before and after welding
- Learn to read basic blueprints/weld symbols under supervision
- Practice and develop skill in core processes (typically starting with MIG, progressing to stick and/or TIG depending on shop needs)
- Perform tack welds and non-critical welds under direct supervision, progressing to independent work as skill develops
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
- Handle material movement, inventory pulls, and basic tool maintenance
- Attend any in-house or external training toward AWS certification as directed
What We're Looking For
- No prior welding experience required; a demonstrated interest in the trade (shop class, hobbyist experience, mechanical aptitude) is a plus
- High school diploma or GED preferred, not required
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a shop environment (heat, noise, fumes with proper PPE)
- Reliable attendance and willingness to take direction — this role is evaluated as much on coachability as on raw skill
- Basic math skills (fractions, measurement, angles) sufficient to read a tape measure and basic prints
- Willingness to work toward AWS certification within a defined training period (commonly 6–12 months, set by the shop)

Compensation
Entry-level trainee pay, with defined raises at 90 days, 6 months, and upon first certification — clear milestones so you know exactly what you're working toward.
